Hyundai Ioniq 5

Watched a recording of 5th gear recharged last night and had a good look at the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Enjoyed the whole segment, In particular the cooking of Bratwurst at the charge point as the Hyundai has V2L capability. I've ranted on before about the lack of easily accessible V2G in EV's before and had mentioned my surprise at no V2 capacity in the model Y.

So, we are off out on Tuesday for a test drive of a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and If its all I hope for the Tesla's getting binned and i'll order a Ioniq 5. I don't like that the tech is there but not released due to Elon deciding and that's been bugging me. At 58k for a car I should be able to run my HWT from it too! (V2L capacity of 3.6 kW)

Anyway, I'll keep you updated on the test drive and which way we go.

WOW, 'Gon the EV's' that's all I can say. The car I had a test drive in was the smaller single motor 200bhp Iconiq 5. I didn't know that at the time and said to the sales lad, not too much poke about it eh? Looked down and i was doing 85 mph on the dual carriageway. The 300 bhp version must be an absolute hoot. Great car to drive, I even stuffed it into a roundabout and floored it on exit. Behaved very nicely too.

Nice interior, liked the paint choices and the showstopper being V2L capability straight out the box. Also ok with the Tron/Lancia Delta/80's acarde machine looks. Hmmn, bugger..... a choice to make. Top specced with everything on its 6 grand less than the Y.

When I first looked at it in the metal it was a 'hmmn' moment. 10 minutes later liked it, post test drive every other car in the dealer carpark looked like Grandads car. Off back in tomorrow for SWMBO to see the colour as she was busy this morn. It looks increasingly like i will will not be a Tesla owner. The one shown in photo is the premium. I'm going for the Ultimate, dual motor, 73kW pack, eco and tech packs, 20" wheels, leather interior, 300+bhp just for the hell of it. First ever new car.
As an aside, the dealership where the car is based is also the garage that I met my wife in back in 91 before switching and heading offshore. Back then the most up to date car there was the Ford Probe. Oh how the times have changed.

I will report back on that! Mid April for a delivery. There are four Ultimates to my spec on the line in Korea and available. Another advantage over Tesla. I actually know when i'll get the car... I am NOT going to be sitting off to the side kicking into Tesla BUT there are a few wrinkles that have been niggling at me since ordering the Y. Pretty much listed them now apart from soft paint and limited colour choice....

The aha moment was realising that I was actually gonna line up a 2k ceramic coating to protect a factory paint job on the Y, my mind went 'nah!!!' And at that moment switched off from Tesla and here we now are.

Just heard that the pack will be increasing in size and that version will be available to order from March with a July/Aug delivery.

73kwh order now deliver in April 22 or
78kWh order March 22 deliver in August 22.

Which would you choose?

This info was not offered, had to winkle it out of dealership. Just shows its worth seeing what's on the horizon.

The main advantage I see here apart from having a cool long distance EV is a quick run in of cable and iso switch in garage and I'll be able to run the HWT off the EV at any time and top up again thru the night. With the range I'll have it will never impact the driving. Using the full 12kwh worst case to charge the HWT and leaving the home battery stack untouched for home Winter use in other areas.

If it charges that fast, no need for the bigger pack.

Think of a journey you’re likely to do that is outside the range of the small battery Ioniq. I bet a 10-15minute blast on suitable charger will get you there and I bet the car outlasts and out-charges your bladder/stomach.

Funny you mention that. North of 50 the bladder does hold court quite often!
