Small things matter
Re: Small things matter
I will speak to a local guy who needs a hand renovating a very good american smoker he entrusted to someone, ..a day of rust removal, might hit you up for some if it gives him the impetus to get going again, thanks for the offer.

As we got embroiled in Fig (must have been a Carry On innuendo somewhere), I’ve almost forgotten about Olive - doh !
We’ve got four Olive trees that we end up having to trim annually (rightly or wrongly) as they grow like you know what.
That’s another option too.

Re: Small things matter
Olive wood, again never tried, meant to be an all purpose smoking wood.
BTB If you had a way to chunk it without contamination it'd be a good seller for the dedicated foodsmoker if keenly priced, but likely too much effort for too little (uncertain return)

To be honest, I don’t think I could produce enough for the hassle of trying to sell it.
Obviously be quite happy to provide some to ‘friends’.

I remember going to Majorca one February and taking the narrow gauge electric train to Soller. It stopped at the top of the hill for people to get out and admire the view over an agricultural/orcharded valley. I thought the whole place stank, like a rubbish fire... turned out to be a much-admired feature of the place, smoke from burning olive tree thinnings!
Friends do take our apple, plum, and pear thinnings for a smoker (maybe smoke flavour addition to a big enclosed barbecue) though - and bay tree thinnings.

Re: Small things matter
Don’t think Olive wood smells ‘bad’ - we’ve only ever burned seasoned stuff.
Presume if they were burning trimmings and it was smoky, it still had leaf and was green.
Interestingly, when cooking Bistecca alla Fiorentina over charcoal, some will put fresh olive branches on top of the charcoal to give it the ‘right taste’

Booked a few bits n Bob's out to keep the WBS running as cleanly and efficiently as I can. £240 which is incl two soot filters, a door rope, a glass, a glass rope and a glass soot diverter. Do my best to run it clean, low & hot.
Hope to have them all in place by next weekend.

Did I see fig mentioned?
Beware of cutting and getting sap on skin in bright sunlight, it can cause a phyto-photo skin rash.

Re: Small things matter
Thanks for that info - was totally unaware.
It can be a bit more than a rash - in severe cases causes second degree ‘burns’ that require treatment on burns units and, potentially, permanent scarring.

Will treat it with the respect it deserves next time I’m pruning

Not being quite so populated up here there are not so many good recycling centres.
Found this one today though, spent a tenner. 16 outstanding classical music cd's and what we think is an outdoor swing seat yet will be utilised as a Winter air dryer in garage after a bit of work.
A good day indeed!
