Part of the "A long read" series by the guardian, some of you will doubtless know I am very anti the olympics & all it pretends to stand for from environmental, competitors, & the expensive nature of use once flog off cheap or allow to go derelict whilst burdening the public purse...
(not helped by having friends in sport who are / were / refused to compete & the inside track that go's with it to widen my distrust of the "at any cost" ethics.
A damning read & a boris folly that continues to lose money & not fulfil the "ideals" (a long way off the reality) fulfilled at breakneck speed (boris instructions) that screwed potential further & drove costs higher ..it remains a folly that costs in all respects.

I hate all the pretence of a "legacy".
You can go on a tour of a dozen previous host cities and see all the derelict, unused, facilities.

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Yet here we are, every 4 years & for around 8 years before to prep / decimate every site & create money off the backs of the gullible public, i'D prefer the option to vote myself out of any costs on tax bills etc & leave it to the stupid.
That kid who lives nearby & "doesn't feel part of it" ...well yes, exactly (spoken from further afield but having to cough up for it anyway)
The in debt "boris wants & gets a slide" ought have a lot more time discussed in parliment.
Rich mans folly from the pockets of the poor.

The Saudi sponsored & not much used Swiss manufactured Thames skyway gondola anyway or whatever Londoners you wish to market it as has come to an end this week, ...good luck finding a sponsor to pay for another few minimum wage people to operate another "London experience" to stick on Instagram for likes
..oh the value & thrills of that (despairs)

What have the Olympics ever done for us? Nothing, apart from the 226-hectare park that attracts six million visitors a year, the magnificent sporting facilities, the tens of thousands of new jobs, the decontamination and opening up of ex-industrial land, the schools, the cultural institutions currently under construction, the new homes, some of which are affordable in a meaningful sense. Not to mention the national feelgood factor while the games lasted, and a more enduring raising of the profile and pride of its location. “We suddenly felt we were part of the story,” says Rushanara Ali, Labour MP for the nearby constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow. “If you came from east London, if you came from different backgrounds, you felt part of it.”
Apart from that, nothing.

If people are crass enough to fall for marketing hyperbole the same way as they were sold off on the millennium some then they aren't that bright, sorry.
Debt, unfulfilled promises, the homeless pushed away by force, the not homeless pushed out by force. ..et c et c (likely every world site the Olympics gets into)
Unpaid workers sleeping under bridges whilst their contractors take money regardless from govt contracts whilst espousing the "do it for the olympics" mantra for getting labour for free
A tiny % of a country feeling it's got something (that the rest of the country is paying for for decades to come)
Roads closed, so Olympic officials motorcade can swish by.
Expensive deployment of missiles on the rooftops of roadblocks because it's "that safe"
Flogging off assets prior to completion because the finances are such a mess, turning really really Shiite expensive art installations into a belter smelter that costs 18 quid a pop for the glib & gullible (it's a money loser)
Projects promised that haven't happened.
& London is deemed one of the successes.
Understandably the majority of Japan was against having the olympics, ..it turned out had for them.
There is a good long read in the guardian about it that takes the shine off any feel good factor.
Rotten politicians working hand in hand with rotten Olympic committee to grow personal wealth & inflate their tv's
You can clean up toxic land without an olympics, the city overseeing the space ALLOWED it to get to that stage, convenient marketing.
Many businesses that were pushed out had to pack up shop or relocate miles away,
Paying kids minimum wage in crappy tourist reliant jobs (like a dumb helter skelter) is a success?
Another Boris the pair project pushed through at any cost, helped on by performing seals of the bbc, athletes whose funding rounds are often largely dependent on the national lottery by another hierarchy of suits so are afraid to stand out beyond the government line.
Sponsors who have funded athletes for years left in the cold because they aren't the Olympic contracted money machine.
Political gagging.
Hyper inflated prices to access & stay in London / visit for the day & a myriad of security / restricted access
Construction worker deaths (the show must happen) brushed under the table.
The typical tax burden is 40 years for the taxpayer for an olympic burden.
Qualifiers for the Olympic places may take up 18 months of an athlete's life per 4 year cycle meaning they have to jump off other schedules they could utilise to improve their rankings in their career & potential loss of earnings potential.
Btw the Romans did a lot of bad along the way too.
The Greek Olympic site is an utter shambles where money was burnt & infrastructure rots ..Rio should be in public memory with much less memory gilding.
Hardly "green" nor sustainable are they!?
I know past & present athletes who both chose the Olympic option or purposely avoided it, a very dirty business beyond the pomp & pageantry.
You see the same patriotic fervour manipulation techniques to get people into wars
"You don't support us? then you are not a patriot" ..seen within American politics & very much frontline trump politics, & used to kidnap & sign up Ukrainian men to fight for Russia in occupied territories currently. (& push any chosen agenda) ..including costly mega projects which exclude the majority beyond getting them to pay for it.
