When they went in to production the bomb cases were cast one by one as "specials" at a limited number of capable foundries across the UK, once machined they were hand filled with Torpex explosive using the time honoured bucket chain and standing the bomb on its nose and pouring the explosive in at the tail end. Interestingly the tallboy casings went on to serve as the first casing for kiloton nuclear bombs and the grandslam casing was shared with America for use in the first series of hydrogen bombs due to their exceptional metallurgical characteristics and space inside the casing.

Barnes Wallis was the archetypal British inventor, quiet and determined genius.

Read the government costings! It appears to be only costing 14 Billion, but reading more closely it is actually more than twice that. Political hype or what?

The PM said the plant would "bring down bills for millions of people across the country".
However, it will take at least 10 years to complete the project with power beginning to be generated in the mid-2030s
Who is he trying to kid? £14.2bn is an awful lot per household, not to mention the running costs buying uranium from Russia (who won't offer an easy deal,) enriching it, running the place, the security, waste storage forever and decommissioning...

Nah, it will be too cheap to meter!
2.0 kW/4.62 MWh pa in Ripples, 4.5 kWp W-facing pv, 9.5 kWh Givenergy batt
30 solar thermal tubes, 2MWh pa in Stockport, plus Congleton and Kinlochbervie Hydros,
Veg, fruit - and Bees!

Yep, and the £14.2bn is just what UK Gov is committing to the build.

The amount of subsidy top up that HPC will get over its 35yr term is around £50bn ...... perhaps the cost of installing 20-25GW of off shore wind?
8.7kWp PV [2.12kWp SSW + 4.61kWp ESE PV + 2.0kWp WNW PV]
Two BEV's.
Two small A2A heatpumps.
20kWh Battery storage.

It would buy quite a few pumped storage facilities too and we wouldn’t be saddled with all the long lived waste either.

No politician really cares as the fall out from the decision hits us decades after they leave office and possibly shuffle off their mortal coil in which case they only have to convince St Peter that their intention was pure.

I think there’s faster more beneficial options than a second EPR, seems like we are throwing good money after bad given the first station hasn’t hit the grid and is years late and vastly over budget.
