The only way to wash the sand off without scratching the panels would be to use a low pressure water system without brushes.
How many millions of gallons of water will that use a day. ?.

Loads of systems exist that don't use any water. They use air blowing and micro-fibre brushes. I think many are automated and solar powered.

There are also coatings being tested that can electrically charge the dust, so that its repelled when a clening 'tool' travels along the panels.

Saw a report on Sky News today about this solar farm and it was built in just 10 months.

I ran it through PVGIS [near Abu Dhabi] and it should generate about 3.4 TWh a year if my maths is right which is 3,400,000,000 kWh.

And just look at that flat output all year round.

I think to get that much power from PV in Scotland you'd need to cover it!
